The Iris Award is equivalent to a Citizen of the Year award and is given to honor people that live in Monrovia for their contributions over an extended period of time as well as recent contributions to our community. Donna Baker is the selected recipient of the Iris Award for 2008; Donna has dedicated a considerable amount of her time assisting several organizations both financially and through her personal involvement. From her first volunteer effort as a Big Sister, Donna's involvement has covered a
broad and diverse group of organizations over a long period of time and has given her a sense of gratification knowing that she has made a difference in the lives of others. Currently, Donna is the President and Chief Volunteer Officer of the Santa Anita Family YMCA. The list of her volunteer efforts
is long indeed and includes; the Monrovia Day Association, sponsor and supporter of Monrovia High School sports programs, and recently helped produce "Making the Grade" for the Monrovia Unified School District. Other organizations she supports are the Monrovia Reads, Friends of the Monrovia Library, Foothill Unity Center, the Boys & Girls Club and Girl Power to name a few. Historic homes and buildings have long been special to Donna and her participation with the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group and as a member of the Historic Preservation Commission has enabled her to assist in preserving a very important part of our community, our history. If all this were not enough, Donna has been a long-time supporter of Habitat for Humanity and rallied fifty-two volunteers for the Women's Build Team to raise funds for the Monrovia project and to volunteer time to actually assist in the building. Donna Baker's long involvement and her generosity certainly have made her a very deserving recipient of the Iris Award. We congratulate her and commend her for all her volunteer efforts.
The Monroe Award, established in 2000 for business person(s) of the year in recognition of outstanding contributions to the community, will be presented to Pam Fitzpatrick owner of The Dollmakers in Old Town Monrovia. The Dollmakers was established in Monrovia in 1991 and from that time on Pam has been involved in one way or another with promoting the Old Town area of Monrovia. With the Dollmakers being a successful business, Pam consistently strives to help other merchants with
their own success by bringing them together to promote the entire Old Town area. Pam founded the Merchant Association Co-op, which meets regularly to discuss and implement events throughout the Old Town area for the benefit of all businesses in downtown Monrovia. Pam and her family have greatly contributed to the holiday season in Old Town, from making the candy canes to pictures and breakfast with Santa, all for the enjoyment of families throughout the area. Pam has a long history of volunteerism in Monrovia; she is a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, served as president of the Merchants Association, served on the Vision 2000 Committee in 1995-96, the Vision 2005 Committee in 2000-2001, and on the campaign committee that assisted with voter approval of the theater in Old Town in 1997, Pam has been an instructor for the Monrovia Leadership Academy, organized the Birthday Bingo event for Monrovia Day and played a major role in the outdoor Summer Film Night. Pam is a supporter of the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts and assists in promoting the Art Walks on Myrtle Avenue and other art events throughout the year. The chamber commends Pam Fitzpatrick for her many years of service to Old Town Monrovia and congratulates her on receiving the Monroe Award.
The Dick Lord Award is presented to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Monrovia Chamber. The chamber is pleased to recognize Becky Shevlin for the many volunteer hours he has given to the chamber during the past several years. Becky is a member of all the chambers committees and during her presidency in 2007, she promoted the chamber through her “Ask” coin, encouraging people to ask the chamber if they needed anything or had questions about the town,
business and government. As a member of the BEACON Committee, Becky regularly presents awards from the chamber to school district employees in appreciation and recognition for their service to the children of the community and has recruited other Monrovia businesses to show their appreciation to the teachers via small promotional items from their companies. If there were such a thing as a professional volunteer, Becky Shevlin would be it. The Chamber greatly appreciates all her time and effort dedicated to spreading the word about the Chamber and enhancing programs and events.
